First and foremost, Don't Panic!

Accidents happen. There’s not much we can do about that. But what we can do is help minimise the damage done to your carpet or soft furnishings. If something gets spilled on your carpet or upholstery you need to take prompt action to prevent staining.

Whilst the following stain removal guide may be basic, it should help prevent some quite common damage that can result from either leaving the stain untreated, or using the wrong treatments (for example, some off-the-shelf solutions can actually bleach ordiscolour your carpet).  It may not remove a stain completely, but it will give your professional cleaner, when called in, the best possible chance of success.

Although some new carpets may have had antistatic and soil-resistant treatments, if a stain appears these should still be cleaned in the same way.  The protection should then be reapplied if the carpet is still of a quality that warrants it.

Be Prepared

Have the following items and solutions to hand for dealing with spills as soon as possible:

  • Clean white absorbent cloth or towel
  • Dry Cleaning Solution - Surgical Spirit (usually available from local Chemists)
  • Detergent Solution - one teaspoonful of gentle detergent for washing woolen fibres, to half a pint (0.3 litres) of warm water
  • Detergent Vinegar Solution - add one teaspoonful of white (not malt) vinegar to the Detergent Solution
  • Ammonia Solution - one teaspoonful of branded household Ammonia (available from hardware stores) to one cup of warm water

Most spills and stains can be fixed.  But if something does get spilt on to your carpet, prompt action is required to the best chance of success.  Remember...

  • Scrape up solids, blot up any excess liquids prior to treatment
  • Mix the solution accurately (at the recommended dilution ratios) and always test any solution/detergent on an inconspicuous area of carpet prior to treating a stain
  • Do not use inappropriate detergents on carpets or upholstery i.e. (washing up liquid, wash powders, household bleach, disinfectants)
  • Keep the fabric or carpet as dry as possible - do not over wet into backing materials
  • Always apply the cleaning fluid to the absorbent spotting material not directly onto the carpet or fabric
  • Always work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading
  • Dab or blot, never rub or scrub
  • Encourage quick drying (carefully use a hairdryer on mild heat to assist)
  • Take plenty of time, it is worth the effort.

Step 1: Remove any excess

Scrape up solids, blot up any excess liquids prior to treatment

Step 2: Mix up the right solution for the stain

  • Alcohol, Coffee, Tea, Liquid Foods, Urine - Use the Detergent Vinegar Solution, a little at a time

  • Chocolate, Sweets, Blood, Glue, Egg, Ice Cream, Milk, Soft Drinks, Vomit - Use a Detergent Solution and follow up with Ammonia Solution

  • Solids, Fats, Tar, Chewing Gum, Oil, Ointment, Shoe Polish - Use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by Detergent Vinegar Solution

  • Unknown - Use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by clean lukewarm water.  If further treatment is needed, use either Detergent or Detergent Vinegar Solution.

Step 3: Test the solution

Always test the solution on an inconspicuous area of carpet prior to treating a stain.  If the carpet reacts badly call us straight away on 01258 837092 and do not take the next steps.

Step 4: Apply the solution

Apply the solutions as described above appropriate to the cause of the stain.  Always blot dry after applying a solution.

Step 5: Final rinse procedure

Mix one-part white vinegar and four-parts water, pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stained area.  Blot the dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture.  Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbent cloth over the affected area and place a weight, such as a telephone directory, on top.  Leave overnight and repeat if necessary.
